Year 2 Parent Get-Together

Year 2 Parent Get-Together

Just a reminder that we have reserved a room at the North Fitzroy Arms for next Thursday, May 3, at 7.30pm, for casual drinks (and bar meals for those who want a night off from cooking!). We’re hoping for a good turn out, so please come along if you can, even if it’s just for an hour or so. So I can give the pub an idea of how many people are coming, could you please let us know if you will be attending, either by emailing me at camandali@bigpond.com or by telling Sophie, Sean or myself at school. Hope to see you there! Thanks, Alison.

Walkathon Volunteer Request

Walkathon Volunteer request

Walkathon Volunteers urgently required!!!

We need at least 20 people to perform the many tasks.
Can you please respond by email with the following information to let me know which time slot/s you are able to be at the Gym kitchen for or other job you can help with?

My name is ...........................................................(new/helped previously)

My child/ren is/are ........................... ...............................................and is/are in

.................................class (teacher’s name)

I can help between ........................ and .............................

OR I can do one or all of the pick ups...Sydney Rd and Albert St (preferably parent/s of older children at school)

I am hoping a co-ordinating parent will take on the job of acquainting themselves with the overall project of cooking 880 sausages and approx. 48 vegie delights by 11:00am and be ready to serve out the fruit too.

This task grid may be helpful. It will be placed on the table in the Gym KITCHEN for you to be able to share the tasks.
Everyone could bring their own aprons and some cutting boards, knife and tongs can be helpful. But, hold onto them yourself. Use the communal ones communally. Label everything you bring along!
Please see the tasks to be done below on the grid.

Wednesday 2nd May, 2012

Jobs to be done

Pick up sausages - Peter’s Meats- Sydney Rd

8:30am
Pick up bread From Safeway-Albert St

8:30am
Collect fruit from La Manna –Sydney Rd
La Manna

Put on gloves, separate and prick sausages ready for the BBQ

Set up the BBQs and light them, ensure there is “sand” to collect oil drips and prevent fire. Lightly grease the griddle for the first lot of sausages.
They need to be cooked by 11:00

Sort the fruit according to the Class Lists

Vegie Delights need to be ready by 11:00am

Decant sauce into serving bottles.

Set up tables at the approximate spots marked on the map for serving. Put the signs up at a height so they can be seen.

11:10
Be ready by 11:00 to start serving as soon as the teachers get the children in some kind of order for respectfully collecting their food.
When things finish, like BBQ is over begin CLEAN UP as soon as you can and join forces together to lighten the load for everyone.

I hope you have a wonderful day. There will always be challenges and I trust you will all pull together and sort things out when they need to be. Enjoy all!

Email your offer of assistance to zanin.luisa.v@edumail.vic.gov.au

Science and The States of Matter

Recently, the year 2 neighbourhood has been investigating science through the states of matter.  Our initial inquiry eventually lead us toward ways of observing gases and the effects they can have on the world around us.  ‘Seeing is believing,’ so by making the invisible visible, we are forming solid understandings about some very fluid concepts.  This video is an example of a simple vortex cannon being used to illustrate the point: gas is matter!
Try and make one at home, it may just blow you away!

How to make a “Vortex Cannon”

Equipment:
-one sturdy corrugated cardboard box [bigger is better]
-one roll of good quality packing tape [reinforcement is necessary]
-a CD/DVD to trace your opening.
-a knife or pair of scissors to cut the hole.

1)  First reinforce your box with the packing tape.  Be sure to cover all seams, this box is going to take some abuse!
2)  Second, trace out your opening with the CD/DVD.  It is important the opening be as circular as possible!
3)  Adult supervision required:  carefully cut along your traced lines to create the hole for your vortex.
4)  Firmly tap the sides of the box to “Fire at will!”
