2013 1 to 1 MacBook Roll out,

During week three of term four, there will be opportunities for parents of year 2 children to see the 1 to 1 MacBook program in action in the year 3/4 Neighbourhood. Parents will receive a newsletter in the first week of term four which will detail the session times that are available. We ask that you return the newsletter indicating which session time suits best. Following the sessions there will be an information evening in week four to answer any further questions you may have about the program. A great first step for parents to learn about the program is to read the 1 to 1 computing FAQ which can be found on the school website as this provides a great deal of information about the program.

Working Bee

SATURDAY’S WORKING BEE
This Saturday is the second Working Bee for the term (We try to do 2 per term). The idea is alternate Saturdays and Sundays.
Start time is 10AM till 1PM Followed as usual by the yummy Sausage Sizzle!

We had a fantastic turn out for the last Working Bee where we cleaned the grounds, did heaps of planting, and made a great start on the Vegie Garden makeover.

These are the tasks we would like to tackle this time:
- Finish the existing Vegie Plot re build (Max to Co-ordinate)
- Mowing – all areas – now that the grass is growing
- Leaf blowing of both the ovals (we’ll supply the blowers)
- Moving of soil and mulch to breezeway 5/6 N1 and other gardens. This is the mulch that has come off the areas now being laid with granitic sand and garden seating.
- Sand in both the playgrounds
– check to see if needs raking
- “Soft Fall” tan bark in both playgrounds
 – rake to depleted areas – again!
- Brick square planter boxes outside 5-6 N1 rooms
 – fill with mulch and soil and plant with Bromeliads.
- Soil / mulch in old vegie garden to be turned over in readiness for new gardens. Please come along with your gardening gloves, rakes and shovels and let’s see what can be achieved when we all work together. If you need more info, or unsure what to bring, give Will a ring on 0427 311 716 and he can advise! Hope to see you there! Will Richards and The Facilities Sub Committee.

Things get growing with CO2

Junior botanists unite! Healthy plants and food production are directly linked with our personal wellbeing and that of our environment. Connecting these ideas with the concept of achievement, the Year 2 Neighbourhood will be investigating the impact increased levels of CO2 can have on the growth of a young plant. A small CO2 generator (powered by common yeast and dissolved sugar) has been joined up to a mini "greenhouse". Over the coming weeks we will monitor the health and vitality of the two plants to see which develops most.

Invitation

We would like to invite parents to come and chat with the children daily at 9am over the next few weeks about their own achievements and what it took to create this.
Any interested parents are asked to see Kevin, Ethan or Rita to select a suitable date.
This week as part of their inquiry the children are sharing their dreams and goals.
Thank you very much to the wonderful parents who are helping to publish the children's thoughts and ideas and to make the learning visible.
We are also listening to songs that inspire us and viewing Australia's achievements. Maggie who inspired everyone with the production of 'Alice in Wonderland' is coming to be interviewed by the year 2 children on Tuesday September 4th.

Like sands through the hourglass...

Hourglasses are one of the earliest known methods for keeping track of time.  They were both consistent and reliable, and unlike systems that relied on the sun, they could be used anywhere and everywhere.  With this in mind, some of us decided to explore the design and construction of our very own hourglasses.  Measuring from as little as six seconds to as much as three or more minutes, there was a great deal of careful trial and error involved in the construction of these homemade timekeepers.

Week Six Assembly

During assembly the year 2 neighbourhood was able to present samples of their recent work in art.  Some of the children read briefly to the school to explain these truly remarkable images.

“We are looking at time through growth and how flowers grow in the art room and in the art space in the year 2 neighbourhood.  When a flower gets cut off a bush it dies easily.”
-Maddy

“Each week during Art, we have been recording flowers by painting and drawing them.  Most of the flowers are nearly dead.  You can tell the flowers are dying because they are flopping.”
-Aidan

“We are recording time through the change of our flowers during art classes.  With Hannah we are drawing the flowers every week in art.  Tania helps us to take pictures of our flowers as they change.”
-Arlo S.

“In art, every week we take photos of our flowers and Tanya helps us take the photos.  We had to paint them in our ‘zeens’.  A zeen is like a magazine it’s just you paint not draw.  Some water is pink, and blue but mine is the original.  My favourite part is when we paint in our zeens.
-Archie

“We are recording how our flowers change over time.  My flower is about 3 weeks old and my flower is so old it is brown and it stinks.  This activity relates back to our inquiry into time and how time is shown through growth.”
-Eliza

Chemical Clock

Connecting some of the recent science experiments with our inquiry into time, the neighbourhood observed the creation of a simple ‘iodine clock’.  This reaction can be repeated at home using basic, readily available ingredients.  For instructions on this and many other fantastic science tricks, please visit Science Bob online!

Watch this space...

Through an ever-evolving exploration of time, our questions have moved toward the many different ways time has been measured throughout human history.  Beginning this coming week we will commence a hands-on investigation into some of the systems that can be built to mark time.

For a quick background on the history and development of timekeeping, please have a look at this very thorough summary found on Nrich.

INVITATION

Parents are welcome to come and join the Year 2 neighbourhood for our weekly "Book Talk" and "Year 2 has talent time".

Book Talk is held every Wednesday from 9 to 10am.
The children enjoy performing on Friday afternoon from 2.45 to 3.15.

Please come along and join in.
Any parent who would like to perform a poem, play an instrument, a song or present something exciting such as a sing-a-long to the children please see Kevin or Ethan.

Thank you for being my Mum for 8 years.

Science and The States of Matter

Recently, the year 2 neighbourhood has been investigating science through the states of matter.  Our initial inquiry eventually lead us toward ways of observing gases and the effects they can have on the world around us.  ‘Seeing is believing,’ so by making the invisible visible, we are forming solid understandings about some very fluid concepts.  This video is an example of a simple vortex cannon being used to illustrate the point: gas is matter!
Try and make one at home, it may just blow you away!

How to make a “Vortex Cannon”

Equipment:
-one sturdy corrugated cardboard box [bigger is better]
-one roll of good quality packing tape [reinforcement is necessary]
-a CD/DVD to trace your opening.
-a knife or pair of scissors to cut the hole.

1)  First reinforce your box with the packing tape.  Be sure to cover all seams, this box is going to take some abuse!
2)  Second, trace out your opening with the CD/DVD.  It is important the opening be as circular as possible!
3)  Adult supervision required:  carefully cut along your traced lines to create the hole for your vortex.
4)  Firmly tap the sides of the box to “Fire at will!”
